Initialement fabriquée avec des bois d'arbres fruitiers, la flûte à bec est aujourd'hui fabriquée avec des bois plus solide tel que le buis, l'érable le palissandre et bien d'autres.

Définie comme faisant partie de la famille des bois, la flûte à bec était initialement constituée de 9 trous au 14ème siècle, puis évolua vers une fabrication à 8 trous. Sa pratique demande une technique d'articulation et de coordination entre les doigts et le souffle.
