The accordion … “Nerdy, obsolete, the favorite instrument of our grandparents”, are the terms that come up most often among the youngest, who pass in front of the department laughing before turning back to the guitars.
The adjective more adequate is in my opinion “misunderstood”. With its sequins and garish colors, it often makes people smile by the image it conveys of the musette era, in which it was at its peak.
Created barely 2 centuries ago in Europe, the accordion was first designed to be practical to transport , easy to learn, even for beginners, accessible to all social classes, and requiring very little ‘interview . You mix all these ingredients together, and you have the perfect instrument that everyone is raving about. Very popular , each nation, each region goes there with its personal touch, according to the different styles of traditional music, which gives a cleverly arranged mishmash, but which could make anyone want to start!
Although this is obviously not correct, I often say that each accordion is different, and specific to each accordionist. Indeed, whether diatonic or chromatic (without forgetting the little brothers like the bandoneon or the concertina…); with standard basses or chromatic basses ; with button keyboard or piano keyboard ; at 80, 96 or 120 bass; with 2, 3, 4, or 5 voices; in swing tuning, American, celestial or musette…, the possibilities are (almost) endless!
Whether you want to play classical or baroque music, folk or trad, tango or musette, pop or rock, rap or electro, the accordion is made for you. With its different registers that allow you to combine the different ones, you can easily adapt to any musical style. Both a solo instrument and an accompaniment, it accompanies you everywhere and in all circumstances.
Both discreet and powerful, it is a sensitive and delicate instrument that does not deserve all the mockery of which it is the victim. Do not be afraid of it, listen to it, learn to love it, and like me, you will never be able to do without it again!
