The artist
Born February 6, 1957 in London, Simon Phillips began his career as a drummer at a very young age. He wanted to play the drums at the age of three, but did not start practicing until two years later, on a small blue Pearl. At twelve, he was sponsored by the Tama brand. He participates in the studio recordings of his father’s group, The Dixieland band. He lost his father at the age of sixteen and dissolved The Dixieland band in order to embark on a studio career. After many recordings with artists with very different styles, including Michel Berger and Roger Glover, he is in demand by very fashionable groups such as Judas Priest or The Who. He then performed with many bands and artists, including Asia, Madness, Jeff Beck, Pete Townshend, Phil Manzanera, Mike Oldfield, Camel, Al Di Meola, Joe Satriani, Gary Moore, Steve Lukather, Mike Rutherford, Andy Timmons, Derek Sherinian , Mick Jagger, Hiromi, Big Country or even Peter Gabriel and Véronique Sanson. In 1992, following the death of Jeff Porcaro, he joined the group Toto. He is also for a time the producer of Mike Oldfield. Most recently, he recorded a new studio album and a live in Tokyo with Michael Schenker’s MSG. Its particularity is that it is ambidextrous: it rarely crosses its arms, its kit is designed for a left-handed as well as for a right-handed person. We can note in his influences John Bonham for his power and Billy Cobham for his ambidexterity and his impressive descents of toms, but also Vinnie Colaiuta for his technique. Simon Phillips is still under contract with Tama batteries and also represents the Zildjian, Promark, Shure and Remo brands. In January 2014, he officially announced that he was leaving the Toto group after 21 years to devote himself to his personal projects.
