How to choose the right microphone?

Before jumping into the choice of a microphone and knowing how to choose the right microphone, it is necessary to understand how it works. A microphone transforms an acoustic pulse into an electrical signal. This is made possible by a membrane that responds to the acoustic impulse emitted around it (acoustic part) and converts this impulse into a signal (electrical part) to capture or diffuse it. Each microphone has a different pickup capacity: some microphones are sensitive to everything that is happening around them and others will pick up more acoustic signals in front of than behind the membrane. This capacity constitutes the directivity of the microphone : omnidirectional, cardioid, supercardioid, hypercardioid & bidirectional.
