The sound of the Humayun RAV Vast tastes sweet and exotic like a fruit sorbet that you drink on a warm late evening somewhere in the Middle East. This scale refers to the musical tradition of the Azerbaijani mughams and has a high-pitched sonorous voice. After a long and precise examination of many mugam modes, we chose Humayun to create another RAV steel drum scale.
The word "humayun" means a bird of paradise in Turkish mythology and is translated as good fortune and luck. This range is ideal for creating tender and lyrical melodies.
If you're looking for an ultimately new and refreshing type of sound and you're a fan of Middle Eastern music, the Humayun RAV Vast will be a great drum for you. It is an upper intermediate / advanced level scale that opens the door for seasoned tongue drum / pan pan musicians to stimulate creativity and enter the stratosphere by playing the tongue drum.
Humayun is one of the modes of the Azerbaijani musical tradition which is based on the mugham system. Each mugham or mode has its own mood and is used depending on the purpose of the musical composition. The Rast mugham is associated with energy and courage, Segah - with love, Shutter - with deep sorrow, Shargyah - with passion, excitement and the Humayun mugham - with sorrow.
The Humayun mode has been used in folk songs full of tragedy and created a feeling of sadness. We took the best of the original Huymaun mode to create the Humayun RAV Vast which recreates the incredible sound and mysterious vibe of this mode without the tragic feeling. You can hear the exotic vibrations of this ethnic music in the voice of this instrument.
The Humayun RAV drum boasts one of the highest pitched tones in the RAV collection. The notes of this metal tongue drum are tuned in 3rd and 4th octaves, the Ding is tuned in G3. The scale has two halftones (G3-G # 3, G # 4-A4). You can also skip the Ding and play the A harmonic minor scale using A4 as the keynote.
This scale has 7 adjacent notes available for playing. This arrangement can be a bit difficult to manage. However, if you have a harmonic and melodic background, you will benefit a lot from it. The Humayun RAV Vast gives you the ability to pick up major and minor intervals. Just like playing the piano, it's up to you which mode to choose and which melody to create - the drum provides you with a comprehensive toolkit for it.
Humayun is the mode that exists outside of the major / minor system. The major and minor modes were distinguished in 1600 and are most commonly used today, but modes like Humayun were created long before that and were used in the composition of traditional folk songs.
Although Humayun is closer to the main modes, it was designed to compose lyrical melodies. RAV Vast has tried to recreate this mood in the Humayun RAV Vast. So you play a tongue drum with a major feeling and lo and behold the elegiac songs are composed. This is what makes this scale so different from other RAV steel tongue drums available for sale.
The Humayun melodies are very contrasting. Much like most compositions in the Middle Eastern musical tradition, they consist of rapid changes of high and low. So the Humayun RAV Vast works great for practicing a fast playing style.
This scale may sound a little bit compared to the B Kurd RAV Vast as these two scales are based on mughams and have Middle Eastern vibes as well as the similarities in playing style.
Who this scale will work for
Since this scale is very different from the western scales we're mostly used to, it can be a bit tricky to deal with at first. That is why we recommend it for purchase for those who have already acquired some experience in percussion like the handpan and the tongue drum or those who have a solid musical background.
The Humayun RAV Vast scale will be interesting for those who love traditional Middle Eastern music. It is an excellent drum for composing and improvising music with Arabic vibrations.
The Humayun mode is not only used in ethnic music. The Humayun mugham was used by Kara Karaev when composing the music for the ballet "Seven Beauties". The Humayun mode was also involved in piano music and modal jazz improvisation. If you feel comfortable with this scale, you can experiment and create some really interesting combinations with jazz players who also play in Humayun mode. It can be a really innovative and eye-catching collaboration. To make it more jazzy, take the mallets (you can find them in the accessories section of RAV products).
The Humayun RAV Vast can be played solo or accompanied by other instruments, including percussion such as darbouka, doumbek, cajon, dayereh and daf.
