The specialist's opinion
The Caroline Crom has been designed after the Muff and Supa Tone Bender type pedals that inspired the brand's Olympia fuzz, and by using BC109 transistors, the Crom gets rid of the typical somewhat soft Tone setting to offer the Place a tone control (the mountain) type Tweed amp from the 50s which also interacts with the gain control (the sword).
The end result is much more pronounced on the mids, with tighter and more defined bass at low settings, and a sound that stands out more in the mix at high settings.
2 modes (Standard and Turbo) are available to adjust the gain range as well as the frequency response. By activating the Turbo with a clean amp or channels, you will get a good boost of gain and power. If you are using the Crom with other overdrive pedals, turn off the Turbo for a tighter bass response and for the pedal to act more like a 70s-style fuzz drive / sustainer. Like all series pedals Caroline Corporation, the Crom is assembled by hand in South Carolina in the USA.
