The specialist's opinion

Keith McMillen has embarked on a new project called QuNeo, a fully tactile control surface that he presents on KickStarter, the platform dedicated to innovative projects.

Specification

QuNeo is aimed at musicians, DJs, VJs and DIY enthusiasts. This control surface consists of 27 pads, sliders and rotary sensors, all sensitive to pressure, velocity and finger position.
In detail, the 16 pads offer 127 levels of velocity response, recognize the XY position and continuous pressure. 2 rotary sensors measure the angle, pressure and distance of your fingers from the center. They are used to control phrases and sounds (pitch, trigger, playback ...), to manipulate controllers, etc.
9 tactile sliders can be mapped to effects controls. They are equipped with LEDs which can be used as vumeters. The multitouch technology allows you to select the length between two fingers in order to configure the stereo or the filter resonances. The Tap function will also allow you to mute and switch a function or a track.
The 17 pressure sensitive switches are organized into 'smart' groups to facilitate the selection of samples, fader banks and transport controls. Each switch allows file browsing at a variable speed that depends on your movements.
Finally, 251 multicolored LEDs are responsible for informing you visually of the status of each function.
QuNeo works with MIDI, OSC or USB protocols in order to communicate with your software environment, but the manufacturer specifies that it will be possible to use it in addition to SoftStep or 12Step controllers. A development kit and API allow more experienced users to create their own code.
