Schubert's two piano trios are undoubtedly among his best works.
Both were written in 1827, a year before his death, and are typical works of his maturity: full of melodic happiness, associated with formal creative power and greater depth of expression.
While he sold the trio in E flat major, Op. 100, D 929 to the Leipzig publisher Probst (although it was not published until shortly after Schubert's death), the trio in B flat major op. 99, D 898 was not published during Schubert's lifetime. The Adagio in E flat major, op. 148, D 897, reproduced in the appendix and known as Notturno, was originally conceived as a slow movement of the trio in B flat major. With his expression reaching grim despair, Schubert seemed perhaps unfit for publication. It did not appear in print until 1846. Schubert's first attempt in this genre is appended to the volume. He composed it at the age of 15, in the summer of 1812.
