The specialist's opinion
'' Oboe Concerto from 1945, instigated by an American soldier (Chicago oboist), '' noted Strauss.
And, in fact, the "oboeist" and occupation soldier John de Lancie did ask the composer in May 1945 if he had ever thought of writing an oboe concerto.
Strauss' reaction was negative, but he soon got down to work. By October 1945, he had finished his score in his place of Swiss exile, in 1946 the premiere took place in Zurich. The first edition did not appear in London until 1948, probably to a large extent without the participation of the composer. Because both the printed score and the orchestral parts show a large number of errors. Some of them have been known for a long time, others were only discovered by Hansjörg Schellenberger by comparing them with the autograph manuscript of the score and the part. The world famous oboist presents this concerto in score and piano reduction for the first time as an Urtext edition of the Henle house!
