The specialist's opinion
Waldorf revisits its flagship hybrid synth with Quantum Mk2 by adding an aftertouch-sensitive polyphonic keyboard, more memory and 16-voice polyphony.
The Waldorf Quantum covers a vast area of unique sound generation technologies and expands its hybrid workstation in new directions.
Polyphonic Aftertouch
Quantum MK2 is the first instrument to present a 61-note Fatar TP8 / SK polyphonic aftertouch keyboard to the world. With its extended possibilities of musical and gestural expression, the keyboard makes it possible to exploit the enormous possibilities of modulation of the Quantum synthesis engine. It is about a new level of expression which preserves all the possibilities of integration of a musician while adding to them an additional dimension of control and creativity. Polyphonic aftertouch can be adjusted in several dimensions, both globally and for individual keys. The high-resolution graphic display promotes visual feedback and control of the adjustment process. In addition to its built-in polyphonic aftertouch keyboard, the Quantum MK2 can be controlled by any MPE compatible controller by connecting it directly to the Quantum USB host port.
Advanced sampling
One of the cornerstones of "The Quantum Mark 2" is its large internal 59 GB sampling memory. Quantum (version 1) has quickly become the instrument of choice for modern and advanced sampling possibilities for enthusiasts of sound and film composers, from Berlin to Los Angeles. Waldorf Music understood the reactions and needs of musicians and continued to develop the polyphonic granular sampling engine as well as the multisample engine.
Hybrid polyphony
Based on an 8-voice dual-filter analog architecture, the Quantum has been expanded to 16-voice polyphony in any combination of dual multimode digital filters with the 8 analog filters. In addition, the combination of analog and digital filters opens up new sonic possibilities, of which Waldorf Music has been the symbol since its inception: hybrid digital and analog synthesis. A new set of assignment modes give the musician easy control. Quantum combines the sheer power of analog and digital hybrid synthesizers with futuristic sounds that are in fact only possible with modern software synths these days.
